L’Autre Voyage d’après Schubert salle Favart
Franz Schubert, décédé à l’âge de 31 ans, a laissé une grande partie de son œuvre inachevé. Si le génie a eu le temps de léguer à la postérité des sommets de musique instrumentale et de Lieder (piano-voix), son catalogue d’opéras reste hélas bien lacunaire en regard des opus lyriques entamés et envisagés.
C’est un peu la suite du cycle de Lieder Le Voyage d'hiver (Winterreise) qu’imaginent Raphaël Pichon et Silvia Costa, rédécouvrant des partitions en leur créant « un écrin narratif », un spectacle composé de tableaux lyriques. L'histoire ainsi dessinée suit un homme, médecin légiste, qui doit autopsier un corps qu’il découvre être son double. En réalité, il assiste aux funérailles de ce qui n’est qu’une partie de lui-même.
La mise en scène de Silvia Costa, assistée de Michele Taborelli aux décors et d’Antonio Cuenca Ruiz à la dramaturgie, est aussi fluide que la musique. En partie grâce aux jeux de lumières, entre obscurité, lueur d’une flamme solitaire et éclairage aveuglant – travail particulièrement subtil de Marco Giusti –, les décors évoluent et passent ainsi d’une chambre d’autopsie à un joyeux salon familial ou une chambre d’enfant, jusque dans des environnements entièrement noirs (oxymores de joies et de peine emblématique de l’esthétique de Schubert). Ajoutant aux contrastes des émotions et surtout en nostalgie, les projections réalisées par Laura Dondoli reprennent des images d’archives de familles italiennes, grâce aux fonds amateurs récoltés par la Home Movies – Archivio Nazionale di Famiglia.
Au final tout paraît naturel et millimétré à la fois sur ce plateau, jusque dans les déplacements et la gestuelle de chacun, chorégraphiés avec souplesse. Le spectateur pourrait parfois croire à des apparitions soudaines, tout autant qu’à leurs disparitions, aminées ou inanimées.
Le rôle de l’homme est interprété par Stéphane Degout (qui interprétera prochainement -à la Saint-Valentin...- avec Alain Planès le Voyage d’Hiver en récital à l’Opéra Comique). Sa présence et son expressivité s'expriment dans son jeu et à travers toute sa tessiture. Son grand soin envers la langue allemande s’ajoute à un timbre dense et particulièrement poignant dans les graves. La finesse de ses nuances et les inflexions de son timbre, légers et pourtant très efficients, impressionnent particulièrement pour Der Doppelgänger (Le Double), avec la saisissante orchestration de Liszt.
La femme – appelée l’Amour dans la distribution – est incarnée par la soprano Siobhan Stagg, lumineuse et expressive, avec des aigus doux et aériens. Elle porte avec une intensité touchante un extrait de l’opéra “héroïco-romantique” Fierrabras de Schubert. Débutant seule, elle est rejointe par Stéphane Degout puis Laurence Kilsby et enfin par tout le chœur, la tristesse profonde se faisant tempête de colère.
Le ténor Laurence Kilsby, en assistant du médecin légiste ou en ami de la famille, incarnant donc l’Amitié, allie la délicatesse de son timbre à la lumière tendre et de son chant sensible. Son vibrato léger ajoute à la poésie de ses textes et à la caresse de ses lignes vocales, notamment en duo complice avec Stéphane Degout.
Le rôle de l’Enfant est confié au tout jeune Chadi Lazreq, marquant par sa capacité à assumer un chant seul et a cappella d’une voix fine mais présente, offrant un moment hors du temps et profondément émouvant lorsqu’il chante -tout en s’accompagnant du piano- la romance “Der Vollmond strahlt” (La pleine lune resplendit), de la musique de scène Rosamunde.
La direction investie, très attentive et exigeante de Raphaël Pichon à la tête de ses phalanges instrumentales et chorales Pygmalion offre des couleurs d’une finesse rare, et surtout un équilibre modèle et constant. Les artistes des chœurs, également de la Maîtrise Populaire de l’Opéra Comique, malgré quelques passages très exposés, font preuve d’une grande précision. L’orchestre possède une pâte sonore très caractéristique, légèrement rugueuse, pleine de contrastes et de puissants effets dramatiques. Il sait aussi valser légèrement tout en faisant bien ressentir la force nostalgique (omniprésente chez Schubert).
L’œuvre aurait mérité quelques secondes de silence conclusif mais plusieurs spectateurs sont si enthousiastes qu’ils applaudissent avant la dernière note, manifestant un accueil chaleureux auquel se joint l’ensemble de l'assistance.
