Tannhaüser libéré au Festival de Bayreuth
C'est assurément la soirée qui reçoit le plus grand succès public de notre couverture de cette édition 2024. Une réussite due à la qualité d'une production que son concepteur, le metteur en scène Tobias Kratzer, a voulu à l'égal de cet idéal wagnérien d'œuvre d'art total (Gesamtkunstwerk), en déplaçant le spectacle à la fois dans et hors de la salle. Pour preuve, ce premier entracte où le public est invité à descendre au pied de la Colline pour assister à une scène comique où Vénus se produit dans un show délirant, en compagnie du nain Oskar et de la drag-queen "le Gâteau chocolat", tous deux également figurants dans le spectacle.
Le concours de chant du deuxième acte est construit sur le vif contraste produit entre cet univers « queer » et le style carton-pâte et toiles peintes du Bayreuth "historique". Un astucieux système de vidéos captées en temps réel révèle en parallèle les coulisses de la représentation et l'irruption rocambolesque de la troupe de Vénus qui vient perturber la cérémonie. Dans ce dernier acte justement, le rire a cédé la place à une tristesse désabusée. Seuls le nain Oskar et Elisabeth sont encore présents, en vagabonds, mis à la marge dans une sorte de terrain vague, avec le camion monté sur cales en guise d'abri. Le rideau tombe sur les images d'un vieux film super 8 montrant Tannhäuser au volant du camion, Elisabeth penchée amoureusement sur son épaule : images d'un bonheur enfui et sans retour.
Ce spectacle bénéficie d'une distribution de haut vol, à commencer par Klaus Florian Vogt en Tannhäuser dont le "Dir töne Lob" permet d'apprécier une intelligence du chant qui sollicite la netteté du phrasé avant la puissance de la projection et dévoile à l'écoute des trésors de nuances et de couleurs. Le timbre légèrement nasal éclaire discrètement l'expressivité générale, avec un registre aigu particulièrement épanoui quand la voix s'ouvre et libère alors tout son potentiel.
Face à lui, le Wolfram de Markus Eiche pourra sembler étonnamment sage et retenu avec une romance à l'étoile qui reste un peu les pieds sur terre. La qualité de l'émission reste vraiment remarquable, avec une attention particulière à laisser vibrer naturellement la ligne dans le registre grave.
L’Élisabeth de cette année 2024 est encore une fois Elisabeth Teige, un rien plus métallique que la saison précédente mais jouant avec une maîtrise insolente sur toute l'étendue des registres, depuis un grave profond, jusqu'aux aigus d'une belle densité et puissance ("Dich, teure Halle").
Alternant avec Ekaterina Gubanova (qui chante également Kundry dans la production de Jay Scheib), la mezzo américaine Irene Roberts séduit par une présence et un jeu d'actrice qui s'accorde idéalement au personnage de trublion et de pétroleuse voulu par Kratzer. En ce jour de première, la voix reste encore dans un cadre expressif un peu contraint mais révèle volontiers une ligne voluptueuse qui s'épanche dans un legato particulièrement nourri. La densité des attaques est remarquable, de même que la façon de négocier les passages à l'aigu.
Le Landgrave de Gunther Groissböck manque quant à lui de profondeur et d'incarnation, avec la même absence de relief observée la veille dans Marke (Tristan et Isolde). Pour plus de lumière, il faut se tourner vers le Pâtre admirablement modelé de Flurina Stucki, belle révélation attendue désormais dans d'autres rôles plus importants. L'élégant Heinrich der Schreiber de Martin Koch dispute la palme du raffinement à Jens-Erik Aasbø en Reinmar von Zweter, sans oublier Siyabonga Maqungo (Walther von der Vogelweide) admirable de projection et le toujours solide Biterolf de Olafur Sigurdarson.
Très bien reçue aussi, la direction de Nathalie Stutzmann a visiblement gagné en spontanéité et en puissance. L'Ouverture a de la tenue et du brio, avec une capacité à soutenir efficacement le plateau. Les choses se compliquent toujours un peu dans la difficile intervention fugato du chœur à la toute fin du premier acte, avec quelques décalages et problèmes d'équilibres entre l'orchestre et la scène. Le chœur retrouve des couleurs dans l'acte II, mais sans l'impact habituel. Peut-être faut-il y voir la conséquence de la diminution de l’effectif, dont le chiffre exact tient du secret d'Etat, mais qui, selon nos renseignements, aurait été finalement moins sévère que les 40% annoncés en conférence de presse. Cette décision affecte passablement l'impression produite dans une acoustique aussi délicate, et ne manquera pas de soulever des débats dans l’avenir.
L’ensemble de l’équipe de ce Tannhaüser reçoit un accueil public très chaleureux, à commencer par les "vétérans" de cette production, avec un fracas d'applaudissements particulier pour la Venus d'Irene Roberts et l'équipe de Tobias Kratzer.
