Cantates et Concerto brandebourgeois, Bach piccolo à Radio France
Musicienne passionnée de la musique de Johann Sebastian Bach, qu’elle défend notamment avec son Pulcinella Orchestra, la violoncelliste Ophélie Gaillard, portée par l’interprétation sur instruments historiques, fait ici entendre et découvrir le violoncelle piccolo. Ce terme italien ne signifie pas nécessairement en l’occurrence que l’instrument soit plus petit, mais doté d’une cinquième corde, aiguë, gagnant ainsi en tension expressive soliste (ici intégrée dans trois de ses cantates et le troisième de ses Concertos dits « brandebourgeois »).
Ophélie Gaillard fait entendre son agilité et sa grande musicalité à travers le timbre généreux du violoncelle piccolo, dont certains grains peuvent faire penser à la viole de gambe et, ainsi, à l’expressivité d’une voix humaine. Pour interpréter les œuvres avec chœur, est convié ensemble belge expert de la musique de Bach : Vox Luminis, dirigé par la basse Lionel Meunier. Le chœur offre équilibre et homogénéité dans les ensembles, surtout les chorals, l’accompagnement précis et nuancé de Pulcinella dialoguant avec les voix dans la subtile beauté de ces œuvres.
Hormis quelques départs (depuis leur place), Ophélie Gaillard et Lionel Meunier ne dirigent pas leurs ensembles. La coordination des musiciens repose sur leur indéniable complicité, néanmoins, certains passages auraient bénéficié d’une direction, notamment le tout premier chœur « Bleib bei uns, denn es will Abend werden » (Demeure parmi nous, car le soir approche) : l’architecture musicale dense y aurait gagné en transparence, avec notamment des entrées plus évidentes. Quelques autres fois dans la soirée, certains changements soudains de tempi exigent une petite mesure pour que les instrumentistes soient en plein accord. L’utilisation d’instruments d’époque fait entendre une baisse de justesse dans les cordes à vide, les musiciens ne pouvant compenser ce fait comme ils s’y emploient en adaptant leur jeu de main gauche.
La jeune chanteuse alto Sophia Faltas partage avec une certaine simplicité tout à fait appréciable son air « Hochgelobter Gottessohn » (Ô fils de Dieu sept fois loué). Sa voix ronde et souple, presque caressante avec douceur, semble pouvoir gagner encore en aisance et en présence pour partager plus profondément son « affliction extrême ». Le ténor Florian Sievers, tout aussi à l’aise dans le registre médium d’un baryton, interprète plusieurs airs avec présence. Si sa toute première intervention semble manquer de soutien dans certaines phrases, il ne manque pas de faire preuve d’agilité et de maîtrise. Communicant un texte tout à fait clair avec beaucoup de nuances, son investissement serait presque trop assuré pour « Ich fürchte nicht des Todes Schrecken » (Je n’ai pas peur de la mort), qui bénéficierait davantage d’une confiance et d’une résolution de serviteur jusqu’au sacrifice.
Le jeune chanteur alto Alexander Chance charme par son timbre solaire, dont le soupçon de pureté peut faire penser à la voix d’un enfant mais avec néanmoins la maturité d’une voix plus ronde. Empreintes d’une certaine douceur en accord avec le texte, ses parties touchantes manquent encore un rien de souplesse dans la conduite des phrasés. La soprano Viola Blache fait entendre des vocalises et des aigus agréablement clairs, avec une interprétation toujours tout à fait à propos. Sa supplique lumineuse est soutenue par les mélodies de la flûte et du violoncelle. Enfin, la basse Sebastian Myrus fait preuve d’une pleine autorité et présence avec une prononciation limpide.
La « respiration dans ce programme spirituel », le Concerto brandebourgeois n°3, confirme la complicité et la vitalité des musiciens du Pulcinella Orchestra. Les jeux de réponses et d’échos sont alors équilibrés et assez savoureux, soutenus par des basses rondes et résonnantes. Si tous les musiciens s'accrochent au rythme rapide, le tactus (mesure commune) ne s’imprime pas dans la course confondant parfois vitesse et précipitation. Les phrasés perdent alors une partie de leur conduite, alors que la pensée musicale plus longue est toujours très sensée dans sa globalité.
Les deux ensembles offrent en bis un autre passage particulièrement fameux de l’œuvre du compositeur : le chœur final de la Passion selon Saint Jean, « Ruht wohl, ihr heiligen Gebeine » (Reposez en paix, saints ossements). Les deux ensembles ont visiblement eu le temps de bien se connaître, mais pas de travailler ensemble ce morceau (manifestant décalages rythmiques et d’intentions), qui confirme nonobstant leur finesse d’interprétation et reçoit de beaux applaudissements d’un public toujours transporté par la musique de J.S. Bach.
