Biographie
Teresa Zylis-Gara est née le 23 janvier 1930 dans la ville de Landwarow près de Vilnius (alors en Pologne, aujourd’hui en Lituanie). Le territoire se trouvant au terme de la Seconde Guerre Mondiale rattaché à l’URSS, sa famille part s’installer à Lodz (toujours en Pologne). C’est dans cette ville que la jeune femme étudie auprès de la cantatrice Olga Olgina Mackiewicz, illustre soprano colorature polonaise, qui venait d’ouvrir une classe de chant au sein de l’Ecole supérieure de musique de la ville (Olga Olgina Mackiewicz devint également professeure d’une autre éminente cantatrice polonaise : Teresa Kubiak).
Formée d’abord à l’oratorio et même à la chanson, Teresa Zylis-Gara peine à aborder la scène lyrique. Elle débute toutefois en 1956 sur la scène de l’Opéra de Cracovie dans le rôle-titre d’un ouvrage (voire de l’ouvrage lyrique national) de Stanislaw Moniuszko, Halka. L’institution polonaise l’engage dès l’année suivante en Madame Butterfly de Puccini, ce qui la décide à internationaliser sa carrière, vers l’Ouest. Elle est ainsi récompensée au Concours de chant de Toulouse en 1958 (second prix), ainsi qu’au Concours International de Musique de Munich en 1960 (troisième prix). Engagée en Allemagne à Oberhausen, elle choisit de peaufiner sa technique avec Dietger Jacob et de se perfectionner sur les scènes allemandes de Dortmund et Düsseldorf où elle constitue peu à peu son futur répertoire. Sa carrière continue alors de se déployer en Allemagne : à Hambourg, Cologne, Hanovre, puis Munich qui la propulse encore davantage à l’international, notamment pour ses interprétations de Mozart et Richard Strauss.
Le Festival de Glyndebourne l’invite en 1965 pour interpréter Octavian du Chevalier à la Rose de Strauss durant 13 représentations avec Montserrat Caballé en Maréchale, puis 16 fois Donna Elvira du Don Giovanni de Mozart en 1967. Les scènes internationales s’ouvrent désormais à elle, au-delà de la Manche avec ses débuts au Royal Opera House de Londres en 1969 (en Donna Elvira), au-delà de l’Atlantique à Mexico et Buenos Aires, et plus largement encore en Europe avec Vienne, Berlin et Barcelone. L’Opéra de Paris l’accueille une première fois en 1966, la même année durant laquelle elle participe en Octavian à l’inauguration de la nouvelle maison lyrique de Dortmund.
1968 constitue une année charnière et de consécration au sein de sa carrière, là encore dans le rôle d’Elvira, avec ses débuts au Festival de Salzbourg sous la baguette d’Herbert Von Karajan, et son premier engagement au Metropolitan Opera House de New York, où elle chantera durant 15 saisons consécutives, avec notamment les plus grands ténors du temps (Franco Corelli, Luciano Pavarotti, Placido Domingo). Son interprétation de Desdémone avec l’Otello de James McCracken en 1972 s’impose notamment dans les mémoires mais son répertoire new yorkais parcourt les rôles de Pamina, la Comtesse Almaviva des Noces de Figaro, Cio-Cio-San, Amélia du Bal Masqué, Leonore du Trouvère, Mimi de La Bohème, Violetta de La Traviata, Fiodiligi de Cosi fan tutte, Liu de Turandot, Marguerite de Faust, Tosca, Adrienne Lecouvreur, Elsa de Lohengrin, Elisabeth de Tannhäuser pour Wagner… jusqu’à sa 257ème et dernière représentation au Met le 31 mars 1984 avec Manon Lescaut de Puccini. Aux USA, elle triomphe aussi à l’Opéra de Chicago en 1973, auprès d’Alfredo Kraus pour la Manon de Jules Massenet.
Le Directeur de l’Opéra de Paris l’invite en juin 1978 pour la première représentation de Madame Butterfly en version intégrale au Palais Garnier (l'œuvre était jouée à l’Opéra Comique depuis 1906 dans une version traduite en français). La direction musicale est assurée par Georges Prêtre, la mise en scène par Jorge Lavelli dans des décors et costumes signés Max Bignens. Devant le succès remporté, la cantatrice reviendra l’année suivante pour Fiordiligi de Cosi fan tutte avec sa complice Jane Berbié en Dorabella, puis pour Elvira de Don Giovanni, en alternance avec Kiri te Kanawa, auprès de Gabriel Bacquier, Christiane Eda-Pierre sous la baguette de Silvio Varviso, cimentant sa place à l’Opéra en France avec les grands interprètes français de naissance et d’acclamations. Au Théâtre des Champs-Elysées, elle incarne à nouveau Amélia du Bal Masqué en version concert pour l’une des très rares apparitions de Carlo Bergonzi à Paris. Les Chorégies d’Orange l’accueillent en 1979 pour Liu de Turandot.
Récitaliste de premier plan, très attachée au répertoire polonais dont les compositions de Karol Szymanowski, Teresa Zylis-Gara participe par deux fois aux fameux Lundis de l’Athénée (en 1984 et 1987). Après son retrait des scènes, elle se consacre avec le même enthousiasme à l’enseignement. Pour son Jubilé et ses 90 ans, le Théâtre Wielki Opéra national de Varsovie lui consacre une soirée d’hommage en janvier 2020.
Teresa Zylis-Gara meurt le 28 août 2021 et laisse le souvenir d’une personnalité simple et attachante, disposant de moyens vocaux très appréciables et lumineux dont les enregistrements qu’elle a effectués conservent heureusement la mémoire.
